However, based on its statement today, most of the cuts probably will come in the company's more traditional wireline business, which has a strong presence in the Kansas City area. AT&T doesn't release numbers, but is believed to have more than 3,000 employees in the area.
"While AT&T is reducing jobs in some areas, it continues to add jobs in other parts of the business -- such as wireless, video and broadband -- to meet customer demand," the company said in a release.
In the release, AT&T cited "economic pressures, a changing business mix and a more streamlined organization structure" for the cutbacks.
ATT also plans to cut capital expenditures in 2009, reducing spending below this year's level, the company said.
